My motto on twitter:
#NoPicture #NoBiography #NoFollow
Let’s face it, you’re not being transparent if you can’t take a minute or two to upload a picture and fill out a quick blurb on who you are. Style is very personal and so is social media. There are countless people that create twitter accounts and never actually tweet. These types of individuals are mostly on twitter to follow others and be kept up to date on what’s going on in the world around them. While others, are constantly broadcasting but not engaging. It’s okay to share about yourself but don’t overdo it. In the end, you’re taking away the most important component about social media, the social aspect. Brands have also tried to do their part through this social media platform by really putting themselves out there by not only broadcasting their brand, but by also forwarding and retweeting other relevant tweets that connect and create genuine engagement between the brand and its consumers.
Transparency gets you noticed! The industry you’re in doesn’t matter. HBO on the GO reached out to me to ask if they could use my tweet as a testimonial for their @HBOGO app soon after I tweeted “HBO GO for iPad rocks!” It’s kind of cool when your buddy calls you to let you know that he just saw your tweet used for a new HBO commercial. The engagement and brand/consumer exposure is priceless.
AFR Furniture Rental has also received some great recognition for being transparent on twitter. Most recently, they achieved to get Lionel Richie’s attention as he responded to one of their tweets. AFR tweeted “Loading in for @LionelRichie at the @Hard_Rock_Live today!!!” and shared a picture of their setup with a few hash tags which got him to engage. Lionel retweeted and commented “Almost ready!”… If you ask me, that’s pretty amazing! Even more so when the picture link gets 85 clicks! (stats via bit.ly). Connect with people, encourage engagement, express yourself and get noticed – all while using less than 140-character text messages. Be part of the global conversation that is Twitter.
We’re not all lucky that we tweet and get a celebrity to show some love. But you’ll never know if you’re not trying something different. My advice to everyone is to experiment and do some research to know how to focus the tweet to your audience. Hashtags will help you filter through the noise and help make your efforts more relevant. Many marketers refer to the 140-character limit as a constraint. I on the other hand see it as the opportunity to be more creative. Whatever your style, make sure you have a reason for tweeting. Your strategy will be a reflection of your style. You never know who's listening. And if you’re going to get noticed it might as well be you and not a picture of an egg!
